Glossary Term: Viral Marketing
Viral Marketing is essentially an industry buzzword that refers to marketing techniques that use social networking platforms and other similar services to increase brand awareness, sales or any other marketing goals and objectives through self-replicating processes similar to that of a ‘virus’. Successful viral marketing campaigns are user driven and possess a certain unique, undeterminable element that drives people to share it either through digital channels, word of mouth and mobile.
Viral Marketing is very much a personal medium and generally comes from an identified sponsor though the sponsor does not pay for the spread of the message. Viral marketing usually originates on or within a company’s designated platform, such as social media, or websites like YouTube. It may take on the form of video clips, eBooks, branded software, flash games, web pages, images and text messages.
